Route Drivers (25 or more hours per week, depending on route)

Trip Drivers- Hours will vary from day to day and you must be willing to work nights and weekends.

Salary/Benefits:

$16.50 per hour to start (drivers with current CA CDL and school bus certification)

$12.50 per hour to start (following successful completion of training for certification)

Classroom sign-on bonus of $560.00.  This is paid to you after you receive all of your credentials, on your third pay check (after 30 days of work driving a school bus route)

Medical and dental plan offered after 90 day probation.

Uniforms will be provided by the company.

Interested applicants should complete the required fields below. An application form is required and available to all qualified applicants.


Physical Qualifications

An applicant is physically qualified to drive a vehicle if the person:

Has no loss of a foot, a leg, a hand, or an arm, or has been granted a waiver pursuant of Sec.  391.49 FMCSR.

Has no impairment of a hand or finger which interferes with the prehension or power grasping; or, an arm, foot, or leg which interferes with the ability to perform normal tasks associated with operating a motor vehicle; or any other significant limb defect or limitation which interferes  with the ability to perform normal tasks associated with operating a motor vehicle; or has been granted a waiver pursuant to Sec. 391.49 FMSCR.

Has no diabetes currently requiring insulin for control.

Has no myocardial infarction, angina pectoris, coronary insufficiency, thrombosis, or any other cardiovascular disease of a variety known to be accompanied by syncope, dyspnea, collapse, or congestive cardiac failure.

Has no respiratory dysfunction likely to interfere with the ability to control and drive a motor vehicle safely.

Does not have high blood pressure in excess of 160/90.

Has no established medical history or clinical diagnosis of rheumatic, arthritic, orthopedic, muscular, neuromuscular, or vascular disease which interferes with the ability to control and operate a motor vehicle safely.

Has no established medical history or clinical diagnosis of epilepsy or loss of consciousness.

Has no mental, nervous, organic, or functional disease or psychiatric disorder likely to interfere with the ability to drive a motor vehicle safely.

Has distant visual acuity of at least 20/40 (Snellen) in each eye with or without corrective lenses and at least 70 degrees in the horizontal meridian in each eye, and the ability to recognize the colors red, green and amber.

First perceives a forced whispered voice at no less than 5 feet in the better ear with or without the use of a hearing aid.

Does not use an amphetamine, narcotic, or any habit-forming drug.

Has no current diagnosis of alcoholism.

Applicant Requirements and Required Tests

Tumbleweed will obtain a copy of your driving history from the State Licensing Bureau.

Applicant Requirements- original

  1.  A valid driver license
  2. Current medical certificate (DL-51A).
  3. DMV complete driving history printout (H-6)
  4. $32 or $42 for fingerprints plus $25 for certificate.
  5. Licensing eligibility document.
  6. The applicant will be fingerprinted by the CHP. The fingerprints will be sent to the Department of Justice and, if applicable, the Federal Bureau of Investigation for a criminal background review.

Applicant requirements- Renewal

  1. A valid driver license
  2. Current medical certificate (DL-51A).
  3.  Documentation of required training.
  4. $12

Applicant requirements- Certificate Upgrade or Downgrade

  1. A valid driver license.
  2. Current medical certificate (DL-51A).

Required Tests

  1.  An applicant must pass a written test on the laws and regulations governing passenger transportation safety and safe driving practices.  The test may be taken prior to the return of the criminal background review.  A written test is not required for a VDDP certificate.
  2. An applicant must pass a drive test using a vehicle comparable to those to be driven by the applicant.  The drive test includes a pre-trip inspection of all gauges, instruments, and controls, with critical emphasis on brake systems and their operation.  The drive test shall not be taken prior to the return of the criminal background review.  Restrictions may be placed on the certificate depending on the type of vehicle used during the drive test.  A drive test is not required for a VDDP certificate.
  3. An applicant for a school or youth bus driver certificate must pass a written first aid test.  This test may be waived if the applicant possesses a current first aid certificate issued by the American Red Cross or by an organization approved by the Emergency Medical  Services Authority, or possesses a current license as a physician and surgeon, osteopathic physician and surgeon, or registered nurse, or a current certificate as a physician’s assistant or emergency medical technician.
  4. Test certificate upgrades maybe required.

Training Class for School Bus Drivers

Tumbleweed Transportation is currently interviewing people for admission into their School Bus training class.

Class Costs:

$70.00 DMV fees for Class B license

(to add the S endorsement DMV will charge the full fee and applicants will have to take all of the DMV written tests again)

$57.00 CHP Interview and Live Scan Fingerprinting

$6.00 for CHP 82.7 Rules and Regulations Book

$20.00 for First-Aid Card

Training Timeline

20 hours classroom and 20 hours behind the wheel training (minimum)

Training is 10:00 to 1:00 during the school year and 7:00 to 12:00 during the summer

CHP Interview, Fingerprints, Written and Drive Test

DMV Written Test

Total training 8 to 12 weeks (approximately)
